Focht, an ordained pastor who urged the students at Selinsgrove College to 'persevere in study' to attain true knowledge. He states that the mind is capable of infinite improvement, and encourages the students to realize their unlimited potential through study. According to Focht, knowledge cannot be givenâ"it must be sought. Though there are many advantages to having a good education, knowledge will only come to those who dedicate themselves to the process of learning. He exhorts the students to study consistently, especially when they encounter setbacks, and to reject the notion that some people are destined for intellectual mediocrity. Focht emphasizes the importance of perseverance not only for personal satisfaction but also for social good, arguing that an educated individual can use their knowledge to benefit others. He urges them to apply their knowledge to glorify God and serve their fellow humans. Ultimately, Focht exhorts the students to pursue knowledge for its eternal value, citing the possibility that our thoughts and ideas may endure beyond our mortal lives. He believes that the pursuit of knowledge in this life will translate into eternal happiness and fulfillment in the afterlife.
