This book describes experiments conducted by the author in search of an effective treatment for a species of aphid that was ravaging corn crops in Illinois in the early 1900s. These pests caused significant damage to corn crops and were found to be closely associated with cornfield ants, which protected the aphids and helped spread their eggs over the winter. After testing the effectiveness of a range of substances applied to the corn seeds before planting, it was discovered that certain treatments could deter the ants and aphids, preventing them from damaging the crop. Among other findings, the author observed that kerosene, when used sparingly, could deter the insects, although it also slightly reduced the number of healthy corn plants. The book provides valuable insights into the nature of this corn pest and demonstrates the significance of research and experimentation in developing agricultural solutions.
