Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book analyzes the phenomenon of corporations employing information technology governance "outsourcing" to achieve enhanced productivity and effectiveness. The author investigates one specific form of outsourcing, where an organization moves from a hierarchical to a market mode of governance, wherein an external vendor takes full responsibility for managing their technological resources. The author contends that this shift is driven by organizations seeking to optimize their production and governance costs, positing that as an organization's production costs rise, so too does their incentive to outsource a larger portion of their IT infrastructure. The author develops and tests a model with a sample of 57 major US corporations, and concludes that business performance and the organization's financing cost structure are significant determinants of the degree of IT outsourcing. The book sheds light on how IT outsourcing can be a strategic option for organizations, enabling them to gain the benefits of economies of scale and scope, and enhance their competitive advantage in the marketplace.
