Him that is weak in the faith, receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations; for one believeth that he may eat all things; another, who is weak, eateth herbs. Bom. I4 :1. VT OU may consider this entire chapter to be the -- source of my theme, and the theme, therefore, to be the Toleration of Religious Opinion. The word toleration suffers a change of meaning in successive times. To snffer an opposite sect to worship at all, to suffer your religious opposite to live, was once the meaning of toleration. But we have passed beyond that usage of the term, and have come to a better age, when toleration means the extending toward one of different belief our friendship and all the civilities of refined or Christian life. Not daring any more to put men to death for their opinions, the question remains as to how much ill feeling we must suppress and actual good-will reveal.
