This little work is the result of the leisure moments intervening between the business hours of the author. I t, however, like all other human productions, shows upon its face many imperfections. It was written for the friends of the author and not for the critic, for in his eyes even the heavens themselves are impure. Much has been said and written about original ideas, but a little thought will convince the unbiased mind that such an idea does not, nor never did, exist, except in the mind of Deity. For example, who could have invented the word steamboat, or telegram before the age of steam or telegraph? Man originates nothing. What he calls invention is the result of hint or accident. The author is therefore free to admit that he has availed himself of facts and fancies from every accessible source, but gives credit to the authors who have aided him in his task, such asS hakspeare, Burns, Scott, Pollok, Young, Thompson, Hogg, and others. The scene reaches back forty or fifty years, to a period when the manners of our people were much plainer than now, and for this reason the book bears the title of Rural Epic, and hence, also, the principal characters are known by the unpoetic names of Green and Brown. The intention is to inspire the young with a desire to strive for greatness and goodness; to prove that we must not do evil that good may come, and that we should trust in God. The accomplishment of these ends, or any one of them, will afford great satisfaction to the AUTHOR. EUKEKA, Spencer Co., I nd., Jaimary
