This book presents records of water level fluctuations for 85 observation wells in Southern California collected by the United States Geological Survey from 1900 to 1920. The wells were located in four principal areas: San Bernardino Valley, the foothill belt, the coastal plain, and San Jacinto Valley. The author measured water level fluctuations to study the extent of depletion of the subterranean supply during periods of light precipitation and heavy pumping. The records reveal San Bernardino Valley had been heavily depleted by 1920. In the foothill belt, the water table was lowered to such depths that it was no longer profitable to pump the water as of 1920. The coastal plain and San Jacinto Valley showed less depletion over the two decades but were experiencing the effects of increased pumping. This book provides valuable baseline data for understanding groundwater depletion and will appeal to those studying water resources, geology, and the history of water use in Southern California.
