This book examines the compatibility of Zionism and various internationalist socialist and humanist doctrines that emerged during the early 20th century. The author argues that many Jewish socialists, intellectuals, and activists opposed Zionism because it contradicted their commitment to humanist universalism and their belief in nationality as an unfortunate sociological reality. The author acknowledges the appeal of this perspective, but nonetheless argues that these intellectuals fail to see the power of collective spiritual and national will towards unifying a people and enabling them to overcome the problems presented by life on earth. The author's insights enhance our understanding of the tensions between national and internationalist identities, and emphasize the unique challenges and opportunities inherent in the Jewish national project of the early 20th century.
