By the Right Rev. T. E. C. Welldon, D.D., Dean of Manchester. The effect of war on the British people in general is a large theme. It touches the life of the nation on many sides, and in many forms and degrees. But there can be little doubt that it deserves and commands consideration, in view of the time which shall come after the war. The war has produced, and is producing, a new sense of national unity. Little more than two years ago the nation was divided, if not distracted, by the rivalry of various sects, parties, interests, and ambitions. There was a bitter antagonism of politicians, both without and within Parliament. There was an aggravation of misunderstanding and illfeeling between the rich and the poor, between the employers and the employees, between labour and capital. There was imminent danger of civil war in I reland. But in the crucible of the war the nation has felt itself to be one again.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a significant contribution to the discussion of what the future might hold for Britain following the First World War. The author has carefully examined both the negative effects the war has had on British society and the surprising shift in sentiment that has occurred during the war years. These include a new sense of national unity, the growing equality between the sexes and classes, and a sense of patriotism that is directed toward the greater good of the nation as a whole. The author further posits that these new sentiments will have a profound impact on the future of the Church of England. As class and gender issues recede in importance and people look toward a better, more unified society, there is a growing call for Christian unity. The author seeks to foster this, arguing that the Church of England must shed its insularity and change with the times by recognizing that all Christian churches have something to offer.
