Synopsis

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has a long and storied history, and few contributed more to its reputation than John D. Runkle. This book commemorates his life and contributions to the university. It includes his reflections on the history of science in America and the need for new forms of education, in particular the 1859 plan to found MIT. Runkle became the institution's first president in 1870, after having been its secretary in the years running up to the Civil War. During his years as president, Runkle helped organize mechanical, civil, mining, and other engineering labs, and he fought to establish a gymnasium. He also oversaw the school's transition to granting advanced degrees and served on the board of trustees until his death. By providing a comprehensive biography of Runkle, this book offers a valuable perspective on the founding of MIT and the development of American education more broadly.
