This book is about an assembled collection of original manuscripts, correspondence, and documents gathered by renowned historian George Bancroft between 1830 and 1850. The main subject of the collection is the decades surrounding the American Revolution, including the establishing of the colonial union and the Continental Congress, the progress of the war, and the confederation of the newly created United States. Bancroft's collection is essentially primary source material comprised of personal and private letters, records from the state paper office of Great Britain, and correspondence with ministers, agents, and others in France, Spain, Holland, Russia, Austria, Prussia and several smaller German Courts. Of immense interest are the records of Samuel Adams, considered the Father of the Revolution, including drafts of his letters to his many correspondents and the complete journals of the Boston Committee of Correspondence. The author himself has said that âstill greater instruction was derived from Manuscript.â The insights offered through the original material in this book help give a more thorough and personal look at the events, people, and political climate of the American Revolution.
