Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is an early 20th century collection of papers from a series of annual gatherings of former prisoners of war incarcerated at Confederate prison camps during the American Civil War. The gathered ex-POWs called their organization the Union Ex-Prisoners of War Association of Kansas and held their first meeting just eighteen years after the war's end, in 1881. The participants' discussions on the horrors they endured and the injustices they suffered have been carefully preserved and form the main body of this book. The work provides a rare first-hand perspective on the conditions and treatment of captured soldiers. In addition to the personal narratives describing the prisoners' experiences, this book contains rosters of names of soldiers who were imprisoned at Andersonville, Belle Isle, and Libby, as well as some discussion of the political climate surrounding the treatment of POWs during the Civil War. By providing an unfiltered look at the experiences of Union soldiers in Confederate POW camps, this book humanizes one of the lesser-known atrocities of the Civil War and serves as an important record of the suffering and courage of the thousands of soldiers who endured it.
