Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the inherent tensions between citizens and their governments in Rhode Island. Specifically, the author explores how the state constitution of 1842, and the controversy surrounding its ratification, both reflects and amplifies the political tensions in the decades leading up to the American Civil War. The author argues the constitution is a product of that era's anxieties over power, whether held by the elite or the expanding electorate, and how the document's authors sought to secure both the expansion of democracy and the maintenance of established hierarchical norms. In the end, the author concludes that although the constitution succeeded in establishing the desired political balance, it also laid the seeds for the tensions that persist in Rhode Island to this day between its ruling elites and its expanding and increasingly diverse population.
