Mr. Washburn sent the original t3rpescript of the notes that make up this volume, he accompanied it with a letter in which he said he depended on the writer to exercise his judgment as to whether the matter should be published in book form or not :and in case of publication to give it careful and if need be drastic revision. The writers judgment being that there was in these notes a sincere and even valuable book, there remained but to take advantage of the free hand which the Author gave him in the matter of revision. The result is a considerably compressed book, but owing, however, to the limitations of time and knowledge on the part of the writer, and the impossibility of submitting proofs to the A uthor, there are no doubt technical and literary crudities which Mr. Washburn would have made right in normal circumstances. For the present they must remain, and if in trying to improve a passage which bad typescript made difficult to understand, the writer has made howlers, he hereby absolves Mr. Washburn and accepts full blame. Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents a collection of the author's reports from the field during the opening months of the First World War, while embedded as a journalist with the Russian army. The author was granted unprecedented access to the Russian General Staff and command on the Austrian front, and offers his perspective on the impact of the war on the landscape, the people, and the soldiers from both sides who were caught in its tragic trajectory. His insights delve into the psychology of war and the motivations of those who wage it, while also capturing the personal stories of wounded men and the medical personnel whose task it was to care for them. Through unflinching reportage, the author humanizes the faces behind the expansive battles of World War I and sheds light on the experiences of the Russian people and their military during a pivotal moment in their history.
