The arrangement of the matter was necessarily determined to a great extent by the method of the original issue as a series of detached articles; had the work been written for publication in the present form, the plan would have been somewhat modified and made more systematic. The seven page-plates have been made from photographic enlargements prepared for the oxy-hydrogen lantern by Messrs. F. Newton Co. of No. 3F leetS treet, London, who have kindly lent the negatives for the purpose. E. A. B.
