9781333444372: Principles and Practice of Electrical Engineering (Classic Reprint)

Synopsis

Explore how electrical machines convert power and how engineers analyze and optimize them. This title surveys the construction, operation, and practical use of generators, motors, and related equipment. It explains windings, cores, and the way multiple phases create smooth, reliable power. It also covers how electrical quantities interact in AC circuits, including resistance, inductance, and capacitance, with diagrams and worked examples.

The material guides you from the fundamentals of magnetic fields and control to real-world devices. You’ll see how alternators generate power with rotating fields, how single-, two-, and three-phase machines differ, and how vector diagrams help predict performance. The coverage includes practical problems that illustrate current, voltage, efficiency, and power factor in motors and generators, plus the basics of transformers and line theory.

  • Fundamental concepts of magnetism, induction, and machine construction (stator, rotor, windings).

  • How different phase configurations affect voltage, current, and power delivery.

  • Techniques for calculating impedance, resonance, and power in AC circuits.

  • Practical insights into efficiency, regulation, and the factors influencing performance.

Ideal for readers seeking a clear, hands-on introduction to electrical machines and their practical design and operation.

Présentation de l'éditeur

The following work is based on a lecture and laboratory course given to the senior civil, mechanical, and mining students atM cG ill University. It is therefore suited for men who desire to obtain a broad idea of the principles and practice of electrical engineering and who have only a limited amount of time to spend on the subject. For such men it is necessary to emphasize the fundamental principles, and to develop the subject by elaborating on these principles rather than by the solution of mathematical equations, because only in this way can the student be given such a grip of the subject in the short time available, that he is able thereafter to make intelligent use of the data contained in the electrical handbooks, or take up with advantage a further study of the special treatises on the subject. The book gives a self-contained lecture and laboratory course. The chapters on the control and applications of electrical machinery have been so written that large sections of these chapters may be set for private reading. In the laboratory course, complete references are given to the theory and purpose of each experiment, and these references in no case go beyond the text contained in the body of the work. The author wishes to acknowledge his indebtedness toM r. A. M. S. Boyd and toM r. R. Kraus for their help and criticism. A. G. McG iLL UNIVERSITY, Sept. I, 1914.

Especially am I grateful to those who have pointed out errors and have offered suggestions for the improvement of the work. The principal changes considered necessary at this time are the elimination of the left hand rule for the direction of the force on a conductor in favor of the conception of strained lines of force, a change in the method of presenting the subject of direct current drum windings, a few additions to the chapters on alternating current circuits and the addition of a considerable number of problems without answers.
