Présentation de l'éditeur

Assuming that the British Empire is destined to continue, and also that it is rapidly outgrowing its old political form, the Britannic Question is the problem of how to effect a closer and permanent union between the self-governing States. The purpose of this little volume is to compare briefly two different views of the subject. Within the past few years the startling growth of Germany snaval power, and the remarkable series of events in Canada which began with the second American reciprocity campaign, have awakened a more widespread and lively interest in the Britannic question. Developments of lasting importance are felt to be impending in the relations between Britain and the Dominions. Everywhere a responsibility rests upon the electorates to decide certain issues soon ;issues which can neither be considered with due intelligence nor be determined with reasonable confidence, unless there is some general appreciation of the principles involved in the alternative solutions.

Présentation de l'éditeur

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book reviews the evolution of British Imperialism from the perspective of its founding principles to its logical endpoint in the idea of Britannic Alliance. The author traces the history of competing ideas that emerged during the late 19th and early 20th century to solve the political problem at the heart of the British Empire: how to adapt its governance while maintaining an extensive global domain. At the core of this question was the tension between British ascendancy and the growing national consciousness in the self-governing colonies, which desired not just autonomy but genuine participation in shaping the Empire's direction. The book charts a course across the major conferences and policy developments that defined the relationship between Britain and the future members of the Commonwealth. It shows how even the most radical proposals, such as Imperial Federation, often failed due to the conflicting interests and opposing views of the various stakeholders. By framing the arguments for and against Britannic Alliance in the context of these historical tensions, this book elucidates the complex forces that underlay the evolution of one of the largest and most enduring empires in history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
