Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book details the early history of Vermont, rich in thrilling tales of settlers facing hardship, legal battles over disputed lands with New York, and Indian raids during wartime. Though the book doesn't detail the founding of Vermont, the author illustrates various challenges colonial settlers endured when settling the land, beginning in 1609 when Samuel de Champlain claimed the area for France after a skirmish with a local tribe. Tensions with the powerful Iroquois tribe, and later the British, led to many battles and raids within Vermont's borders. These geopolitical conflicts, coupled with brutal winters, made it difficult for many Europeans to settle the area until peace was achieved in 1763, which led to logging and farming growth within the region. The book concludes that despite many early challenges, Vermont eventually flourished, showing the determination settlers had to forge a new life, even in the face of adversity.
