Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the stability of equilibria in the resistive, viscous, incompressible magnetohydrodynamic sheet pinch in a gravitational field. The author obtains necessary and sufficient conditions for their exponential stability for arbitrary (nonconstant) functions of the vertical coordinate, consistent with the equilibrium equations. The stability criteria do not depend on viscosity or resistivity. If gravity is positive anywhere, the pinch is unstable. Stability is equivalent to gravitational stability if the magnetic field or resistivity is constant. Nonconstant resistivity and insulating boundaries imply instability for small wavenumbers, preventing gravitational stabilization. However, perfectly conducting boundaries permit gravitational and magnetic stabilization for certain resistivity profiles. Notably, the author shows that imposing a properly chosen zero-order magnetic field can stabilize an unstable system with nonconstant resistivity and no gravity.
