Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is an exploration of the factors that led to the nearly continuous state of animosity between England and its American colonies from 1763 to 1815, culminating in the War of 1812. The author argues that social and economic differences had created a fundamental divide between them. While the English system of government rested on aristocratic authority, the thirteen colonies had developed a more democratic and republican ethos. Tensions came to a head over Britain's attempts to impose taxes on the colonies, who saw it as tyranny and a threat to their liberties. Even following the repeal of the Stamp Act, Parliament's insistence on the Townshend duties sparked widespread boycotts and resistance. The author concludes that the divergent political habits of the two sides made armed conflict inevitable, leading to the American Revolution and subsequent discord.
