Beginning with a historical account of spectral research from the early 19th century to the author's time, it introduces the work of early scientists like Huggins, Schuster and Rydberg and gives special focus to the Balmer series found in hydrogen spectra. The book describes the characteristics of different spectral series and explains Rydberg's work in representing these series mathematically, which led to a constant that is used to this day. It also discusses the Rydberg-Schuster law and Runge's law, as well as the spectrum of hydrogen and the work of Hicks and others in developing more complex formulae.
