Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book by the author explores the development of the Scottish Church, from its inception in the 7th century to its Reformation in the 16th century. Prior to the arrival of St Margaret in 1068, the Scottish Church followed a monastic style of Christianity, with its own unique ecclesiastical calendar, local saints, customs and ceremonies. Beginning with St Margaret, the author shows how the influence of the Roman Catholic Church gradually transformed the Scottish Church in the decades following the 11th Century, a time that also witnessed the construction of great abbeys and cathedrals and the expansion of religious orders. The author also examines the growth of papal influence over the Scottish Church, and the eventual rise of a desire for reformation that culminated in the Scottish Reformation of 1560 and the establishment of Presbyterianism as the state religion of Scotland.
