Excerpt from A History of Manitowoc County

Thls, then, 15 the alm of th1s history No clalms are made for lts llterary merlts. On the other hand the author has more largely devoted hls efforts towards securmg correctness m pomt of fact than elegance of style Differ edt phases ln the county''s hlstory are treated toplcally also, Instead of an at tempt bemg made to wrlte one connected story of the entlre ex1stence of the county, as It was thought true prospectlve would thus be better afforded. It may be objected that too many dates have been Inserted. From the l1terary standpomt thls 1s doubtless true, but 1t must be remembered that above all the 1dea1n wrlttmg th1s work was the recordlng ln some permanent form df many facts Wth m future years may be useful as well asmterest1ng,1n re gard to the begmmng and progress of the county. The older generatlon 1s rapldly passmg off the stage of actlon and the orlgmal evidence of h1stor1ca1 value.,such as landmarks, 1s bemg obllterated year by year To preserve at least a partial account of the changes made by the course of tlme was the task the author set before h1m. Without further apology he submlts the result to the reader. Ralph gordon plumb.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Manitowoc County lies on the shore of Lake Michigan and is bordered by Calumet, Sheboygan, Brown and Kewaunee Counties. When the first settlers came to the county they found it an almost impenetrable wilderness. The first permanent settlement was made in 1836, but there were others who lived in this area before then. The author covers Native American settlement, the early white settlers, community growth and foreign immigration, railroads, military affairs, politics, village and city government, churches, societies and organizations, education, business and industry, along with many other topics of interest. Illustrations of prominent citizens and area buildings are interspersed throughout the text. There are also four informative appendices containing agricultural statistics, marine statistics (clearances, tonnage and crafts built), a list of county officers and a list of village and city officers. A fullname plus subject index is also included.
