Professor Paulsen sadmirable outline of the history and character of the German Universities, forms, in the original, the introductory part of the work published under the direction of the Imperial German Government as an accompaniment to its educational exhibit at the Columbian Exhibition at Chicago in 1893. The full title of that work is as follows: Die deutschen Universitaten: Fiir die Universit tsausstellung in Chicago 1893 unter Mitwirkung zahlreicher Universitatslehrer herausgegeben von W. Lexis. 2vols., Berlin, 1893. The excellence of the account is believed to be a sufficient justification for its presentation in an English dress. Professor Paulsen has quite recently treated some of the questions here discussed, but in more detail, in an article entitled: Die deutsche Universitdt als Unterrichtsanstalt und als Werkstdtte der wissenschaftlichen Forschung in the Deutsche Rundschau, September, 1894. A few foot-notes have been added by the translator in the interest of readers whose acquaintance with German customs may be but slight. My hearty thanks are due to Professor Paulsen for his ready consent to the appearance of his work in English; to Professor Nicholas Murray Butler for constant cooperation and advice, no less than for the Introduction which he has so kindly contributed; to Professor Brander Matthews, whose great taste and valuable criticism were most generously put at my disposal; and to Messrs. Macmillan and Co. for their careful publication and the attractive dress in which the little book appears. E. D. P. New York, January,

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the origins, nature and influence of German universities. Their establishment formed part of a wider European movement in higher education, particularly influenced by universities in France and Italy. Founded as a partnership between church and local rulers, universities issued their own degrees and their teachers held positions in the church. German universities were notable for the combination of teaching and scientific investigation. That remains their hallmark. The author contends that this is key to the strength of German universities and their capacity to attract and influence leading thinkers - a role he says they will continue to play.
