To become a good baseball player is the ambition of every boy at school, and the absence of any sound, practical advice has often resulted in spoiling young men, who, under different conditions, might have been developed into first-class players. Many amateur and young players jump at the conclusion that as they are able to throw, or catch a balj, or run fast, they are on the proper road to become first-class players, and that these attributes constitute the groundwork of a baseball player. This is a common error, inasmuch as the head is the principal stock in trade of a firstclass player. While the arms and legs are necessary adjuncts, they must be controlled by a superior power, which is the brain. This is essential in all good players. Many of the greatest experts who have graced the diamond may be said to have reached that degree of excellence and prominence mainly through their superior headwork while on the ball field.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book embeds the reader in the action by presenting a complete set of instructions on how to play baseball according to the rules and strategies of the early 20th century. The author Connie Mack, one of baseball's greatest figures, and others present clear guidance on all facets of the game, from catching and throwing to hitting and pitching. These tips, when read as a historical document, aid the reader in understanding the evolution of baseball as a sport. Mack's belief that headwork carries the game more than physical prowess shows how the cerebral aspects of baseball which are so fundamental to the sport today were already present in the early 1900s.
