The author, a spiritually minded scholar, brings a lifetime of study to bear on the topic and describes several varieties of backsliding, including falling into gross immorality, loving the world, and becoming overly engaged in political disputes. He also lists the symptoms of a backslider, such as practicing religious duties out of custom, trying to justify their sins, engaging in sinful activities without remorse, and enjoying or intentionally placing themselves in the path of temptation. The author cautions that while sin is dangerous in and of itself, it is far more dangerous to persist in it, and that those who do so are at great spiritual risk. The book concludes with a discussion of the dangerous effects of allowing sin to linger on the conscience, emphasizing the importance of seeking forgiveness through the provided propitiation, Jesus Christ.
