Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book will appeal to readers interested in medieval history and municipal government and is the first volume in a multi-volume set that will seek to publish a selection of extracts from the extant records of the burghs of Scotland, sources that have been almost entirely neglected by historians. The volume consists of extracts from the oldest records of the city of Edinburgh, ranging in date from 1403 to 1528, including all that is known to exist of the burghal legislation of the capital during that period. The sources include a volume of acts and ordinances by the civic authorities transcribed from earlier records not now existing, and the oldest surviving volume of extracts from old records of the burgh, as well as selections from the protocol books of notaries of the burgh, from the register of burgesses and guild brethren, from an inventory of the writs of the city prepared in 1638, and from various original seals of cause granted by the magistrates and council to the various incorporations. The documents included illustrate the municipal arrangements, the social life and habits of the burgesses, and the financial condition of the Scottish capital during this period, offering insights into the activities of the burgh authorities to control and regulate the lives of the inhabitants of the city. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. N° de réf. du vendeur 9781333528027_0
