Over forty beams were tested to the point of failure, with varying end conditions to provide different modes of failure. This data is then used to generate equations that help predict the ultimate strength of I-beams under a given mode of failure, and how that strength is affected by differing variables. The author stresses that the common practice of equating the maximum fiber stress in an I-beam to the ultimate tensile strength of the material is an oversimplification. He presents data showing that beams will fail in a complex sequence of local buckling and yielding before that point is reached. The book concludes with several case studies of beam failures in the field and how these failures might have been prevented.
