The author uses data and observations gathered over a two-month research trip and pairs the data with historical exploration and development information to create a picture of the viability of the coal industry in the region. The author also provides analysis of the coal, its quality and quantity, potential mining methods and estimated costs. The author ultimately concludes that while there is enough coal to meet the needs of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corporation for many years, there are obstacles to a successful operation including transportation difficulties, the complexity of the local geology, and the uncertain suitability of the coal itself for the metallurgical practices of the day.
