This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This novel takes place in Florence, Italy and follows the story of Carleton, an American man who returns to the city after a five-year absence. Having known Elizabeth Craven for some time, he finds himself deeply affected by the recent death of her husband James. Carleton finds himself feeling lost and unsure of how to proceed in his life even after trying his hand as a writer, and ultimately decides to return to Florence in hopes that Elizabeth might be able to help him find his way. Elizabeth, now widowed, finds herself drawn to Carleton's charm and intelligence, and she is intrigued by his stories of life in America. However, their budding relationship is complicated by the arrival of Mrs. Langham and her daughter Clara, who have come to visit Elizabeth. Mrs. Langham is a beautiful and wealthy woman, and she is immediately drawn to Carleton. Clara, on the other hand, is more reserved, but she is also intelligent and kind. As Carleton, Elizabeth, Mrs. Langham, and Clara spend time together, they find themselves drawn into a complex web of relationships. Carleton must come to terms with his own feelings for Elizabeth, while Elizabeth must decide whether she is ready to move on from the memory of her late husband. Mrs. Langham must confront her own insecurities, while Clara must find a way to balance her desire for independence with her need for love. Ultimately, this book is a story about love, loss, and the search for meaning in life. The author explores the complex ways in which people relate to each other, and she does so with great insight and compassion. This book is a must-read for anyone who is interested in the human condition.
