Excerpt from The Bagpipers
Therefore it is not, as some have reproachfully declared, for the petty pleasure of producing a style hitherto unused in literature, and still less to revive ancient forms of speech and old expressions which all the world knows and is familiar with, that I have bound myself to the humble task of preserving to Etienne Depardieu''s tale the local color that belongs to it. It is, rather, because I find it impossible to make him speak as we do without distorting the methods by which his mind worked when he expressed himself on points with which he was not familiar, and as to which he evidently had a strong desire both to under stand and to make himself understood.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book takes us back to a rural France of the 18th century, vividly capturing the lives and loves of ordinary peasants in a small village. The narrative is woven through the voice of Etienne Depardieu, a young man who recounts his youthful experiences, particularly his deep affection for his cousin Brulette, a beautiful and enigmatic girl who captivates the attention of many young men. Etienne's love for Brulette is intertwined with his observations of the village's inhabitants, notably Joseph Picot, a melancholic and introspective young man who is also drawn to Brulette. The author delves into the complexities of rural life, exploring the social dynamics, the struggles for survival, and the intricate web of relationships that binds these individuals. Through Etienne's perspective, the book unveils a world of unspoken desires, unrequited love, and the enduring power of human connection, revealing the richness and nuance of peasant life in a bygone era. The book's keen eye for detail and sensitivity to the complexities of human relationships offer a unique and captivating glimpse into the inner lives of those often marginalized by history.
