Against the blue sky to the north lay a dark blur that, as our troop train ran on through the level plains of Eastern Bengal, rose ever higher and took shape—the distant line of the Himalayas. Around us the restful though tame scenery of the little Cooch Behar State. The chess-board pattern of mud-banked rice fields, long groves of the graceful feathery bamboo, here and there a tiny hamlet of palm-thatched huts—on their low roofs great sprawling green creepers with white blotches that look like skulls but are only ripe melons. But the dark outlines of the distant mountains drew my gaze and brought the heads of my sepoys out of the carriage windows to stare at them.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book transports readers to the remote outposts of the British Indian Army in the early 20th century. The author, a veteran of the Indian Army, recounts his experiences stationed at Buxa Duar, a small fort on the border of Bhutan. Through vivid detail, he paints a picture of life in this isolated frontier post, capturing the challenges and unexpected pleasures of existence in a remote and often unforgiving landscape. The author details the rigors of military duty, including the daily routines of drill and administration, the diverse languages and cultures of the Indian sepoys, and the unique medical cases encountered in a frontier setting. The book also provides insights into the dynamics between British officers and their Indian troops, as well as the complex relationships with the local Bhutanese population. Beyond its historical significance, the book explores universal themes of isolation, duty, and resilience in the face of adversity. Readers will find themselves transported into a world of adventure and discovery, where nature's wonders collide with the realities of empire and the human spirit is tested in the most challenging of environments. This fascinating account offers a rare glimpse into a forgotten corner of the British Empire and the lives of the men who served there.
