If any apology is necessary for the gathering together of these articles in verse, it should come from another source than the author. Those who have honored me by reading ry first volume A vill discover a marked dil Terence in the character of the two books and it may be to my prejudice with some of them; but a close observation has taught me that humor is more graciously received bj-the general reader than mere fine sentiment. If anything in these pages shall leave an impression that I have indulged a less worthy spirit, it must be regarded as growing out of an inability to make myself clearly understood. I have conceived no satire. I have given no individuality or special direction to any line in the book, and those who know me best will readily acquit me cf any dosJL nto be other than amiable and delicate in every allusion. My inclination h;ts been, and still is to a far different accomplishment, but like most persons who love music, some songs I sing for myself and some for the audience. These are for those who like them. HENRY T. STANTON.
