From The American Friend of Fifth month 2and 9, 1901. WILLIAM ROTCH. EY AUCJUSTIKE JONES. The career of a man who was possessed of strong, individual character, tempered by sincere and deep religions convictions, with tender conscience, who, with master-strokes, established and built up great industries and influenced from his center the business of the world, ought never to be lost sight of. His worthy example is the heritage of mankind, to be cherished in the perpetual annals of the race. We owe vastly more to the heroes of invention and of enterprise, who have clothed and fed the multitude and spread before the entire world the light of modern civilization than to the whole race of violent men who have changed again and again the map of the world, whose vain-glorious chronicles are the staple of history, far beyond their merit or usefulness. William Kotch, a distinguished member of the Society of Friends, was born in 1734 in the island of Nantucket, Mass. His father, Jdin Eotch ri704-84. his brother Francis, both Friends, were, like himself, largely interested in the whale fishery and shipping, earlv in Nantucket and later in New Bedford.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book tells the extraordinary story of William Rotch, a Quaker merchant and ship-owner who navigated the turbulent waters of the American Revolution and the French Revolution. Rotch's life, lived according to his deeply held Quaker beliefs of peace and non-resistance, stands as a testament to the power of conviction in the face of adversity. The author traces Rotch's journey from his early years in Nantucket, a center of the whaling industry, to his daring ventures in France, where he established a thriving whaling enterprise despite the ongoing conflict. The book reveals how Rotch's unwavering commitment to his principles led him to defy both British and American authorities, facing imprisonment and even death threats. Beyond the captivating narrative of Rotch's life, the book delves into the complexities of Quakerism in a world at war. Rotch's interactions with prominent figures of the time, including William Pitt and Mirabeau, illuminate the intersection of religious conviction, political turmoil, and the struggle for human rights. The book's exploration of the Quakers' petition to the French National Assembly for religious liberty offers a powerful glimpse into the challenges faced by those seeking peace and tolerance in a world consumed by conflict. The book provides a compelling and unique perspective on the era, highlighting the remarkable individual who refused to compromise his principles even in the most extreme circumstances, and demonstrating the enduring power of pacifism and its potential to shape a more just world.
