The letters document his life from adolescence through adulthood and into old age. As a young boy, Stoddard was already exhibiting habits of self-discipline, careful planning for the future, and an early concern for his soul's well-being. By the age of 15, he was deeply engaged in self-examination and a study of scripture. The book also contains many of his letters to his siblings, to whom he dispensed wisdom and advice even as a young man. These letters provide insight into the social and cultural norms of the time, as well as the values that shaped and motivated young Stoddard.
