This book delves into the rich history of the Shaikiya tribe, a prominent group in the northern regions of Sudan. From their origins in Arabia to their establishment in the Sudan, the book traces their role in shaping the region's political landscape, particularly during the 16th to 19th centuries. The author explores the Shaikiya's interactions with the Nubian kingdoms, the Fung Empire, the Ottoman Turks, and the Mameluks, shedding light on power dynamics and conflicts. The book also examines the internal dynamics of the Shaikiya tribe, including their customs, traditions, and social organization. Through meticulous research and analysis, the author uncovers the intricacies of a fascinating tribe that played a pivotal role in the history of the northern Sudan.

History of the Northern Sudan from the Christian Era to the present day. This treatise was to consist of three parts, viz.: i. The Nubian Kingdoms. 2. The Fungs and the Shaikiya. 3. The Turkish A scendancy. The time, however, at my disposal was not sufficient to allow of my carrying out my original intention. I therefore resolved to devote my attention solely to Part II, and the result is the present small volume, which will, I hope, arouse sufficient interest in the history of this most remarkable corner of the Sudan to promote further researches into its records. Owing to the almost complete destruction of native manuscripts which took place during the Dervish rebellion, the historian has but very slender material to work upon, and is largely dependent upon the chance remarks of travellers who have visited or passed near to this country.
