Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is an early 20th century look into the wages, cost of living, and working conditions of the citizens of Maryland. The author examines the slow but steady rise of wages over a decade as the cost of living swiftly increases, leaving the working class with less buying power than in previous years, while the consolidation of several industries into large corporations sees the working class pitted against an increasingly powerful industrial class. Using interviews, statistics, and examples from strikes, the author paints a vivid picture of what it was like to be a working person in Maryland at the turn of the century. The author argues that while there were some gains in the early 20th century in terms of wages and hours worked, the conditions and wages of the working class had not kept pace with the cost of living and that by creating large combinations of capital, the gains made by the working class were offset by the increased profits of the industrialist class.
