This book presents the results of a series of experiments conducted by the author to compare the performance of chambered and unchambered 32-pounder naval guns. The experiments were carried out at the Naval Experimental Battery in Washington, D.C., and involved firing hundreds of shots from each type of gun at various elevations. The dataset produced by these experiments is unique and provides valuable insights into the relative merits of chambered and unchambered guns. The results of the experiments showed that the chambered gun had a slightly diminished recoil but also exhibited greater variations in range compared to the unchambered gun. These findings have implications for the design and use of naval artillery and contribute to the understanding of the factors that affect the performance of guns.
