Synopsis

Master arithmetic with a proven spiral approach that builds confident, mental math skills.

Foundations of Elementary Arithmetic presents the five core operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—through a continuous, stepping-together method that blends oral and written practice. This edition emphasizes how quick, accurate thinking supports written work, helping students connect everyday number sense with formal math concepts.

Designed for graded schools, the book introduces problems in a progressive sequence. Pupil learning focuses on quantity and magnitude, with abundant concrete problems to keep math tangible before moving into abstract calculations. The approach encourages mental strategies while providing structured written practice, so learners can master essential operations and apply them across real-world contexts.

  • Spiral progression that gradually increases difficulty while reinforcing core ideas
  • Integrated oral and written work to strengthen number sense and calculation speed
  • Concrete problems tied to real magnitudes (length, capacity, money, time, area)
  • Clear terminology and definitions to support early mathematical literacy

Ideal for readers seeking a foundational, classroom-tested path to arithmetic fluency and a solid stepping stone into broader mathematics.

Présentation de l'éditeur

The prominent feature of this book is the spiral advancement plan upon which it is built. The basis of the spiral is the five fundamental thought processes of arithmetic, viz.: 1. The uniting of numbers (of things) addition. 2. The separating of numbers (of things) subtraction. 3. The taking of numbers (of things) a given number of times multiplication. 4. The finding of how many times one number (of things) is contained in another number (of things) division. 5. The finding of one of the equal parts of a number (of things) division; or, as it is sometimes cslled, partition. These five processes appear in groups, five times on page 9in problems so simple that the tyro will find little difficulty in understanding them; twice on page 10; five times on page 11; four times on page 23; twice on page 25 ;three times on page 89 ;twice on page 96; three times on page 109 ;twice on page 114; three times on page 119; twice on page 146, and at least once on nearly one fourth of the pages of the book. Each of these spirals is a little more difficult than the preceding one, and each is preparation for the one that follows. The variety in the book comes (1) from the introduction of new terms, (2) from the gradual increase in the difficulty of the problems, and (3) from the different magnitudes (things) to which these processes are applied.
