Excerpt from The Natural History of Thought in Its Practical Aspect
In every other branch of knowledge it is deemed necessary to begin at the beginning, but in regard to-the cultivation of the mental faculties this rule is not Observed. Nearly all that is done or attempted in the way of training the intellect is applicable only to the mind in the advanced stages of its history. The rules prescribed and the means used in the education Of youth are designed to furnish information to minds already more or less developed, and are inapplicable to the incipient faculty. They therefore afford no help towards moulding the mind and directing its first efforts during the plastic period of its formation. If the mind had no incipient stage, but sprang into being at once with a mature power of understanding, there would be reason in regarding it in that aspect, and in providing only for its requirements in that condi tion. Seeing, however, that it resembles all other of God's works in attaining its powers by a gradual process of development from zero, it seems proper that it should be studied and cultivated from its origin in babyhood. The birth, progress and early development of the faculty being generally dis regarded, the infant mind is left to form or deform itself under such in?uences as may happen to environ the first stages Of childhood and supply the first material for the exercise of the incipient intellect.
