Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book meticulously examines the relationship between tariff duties and preferential railroad transportation rates in the United States between 1913 and 1921. During this period, the author found that preferential railroad rates were not intended to offset tariffs, but were a carefully crafted system to adjust railroad charges with reference to rates on like commodities handled by carriers serving rival ports. The author also found that the practice of granting special railroad rates on exports and imports was primarily driven by the railroads' desire to develop traffic and the efforts of commercial interests to secure a satisfactory share of the United States' foreign trade. This book provides a detailed examination of the railroad rates in the United States during this period, and offers valuable insights into the complex relationship between transportation costs, tariffs, and international trade.
