Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents a detailed account of the 1880-1890 investigation into the state of farm and home ownership in Maine. This report includes statistics on farm and home ownership and indebtedness, examining the impact of encumbrance on ownership qualifications and the value of farms and homes, with and without incumbrance. The investigation found that 66% of families in Maine owned their homes, and 34% rented. Of those who owned their homes, 55% owned them free of incumbrance, while the remaining 45% had mortgages or other debts. The average value of a farm or home with an incumbrance was $532, while the average value of a farm or home without an incumbrance was $681. These figures show that the ownership of farms and homes in Maine was a significant part of the economy and culture of the state in the late 19th century, and that mortgage debt was a common feature of homeownership.
