Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines the roots of Modern Protectionism, which differs from its historical counterpart in targeting consumer protection rather than class interests. The author examines its defense of tariffs and other trade restrictions, and refutes the Protectionist argument that such policies increase national wealth or raise wages. On the contrary, the book shows how this approach leads to less choice for consumers, plus both higher prices for goods and lower returns for investments. It concludes that the Protectionist approach to stimulating employment has never, and cannot, work: more effective alternatives such as government incentives and bounties are preferable. Overall, this book demonstrates that a Free Trade approach still offers the best economic outcomes.
