The author went to great lengths in their research, compiling a record so thorough that, whilst originally published in five volumes between 1885-1893, it became apparent that for ease of use it should be republished in a single volume which is what this volume represents. So it proves an invaluable resource for researchers in early English art. The listings are very comprehensive including all titles up to 1800 with very few exceptions. After that date only a selection is listed. Instead, the author makes reference to the British Institution and other public exhibitions for the years between 1800 and 1880. The entries are compiled in annual order and are supplemented by index of artists.
