Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book reviews the history of Iowa's public library system from the establishment of the first free public library in 1843 right up to the early years of the twentieth century. The text gives insights into not only the development of Iowa's library system but also of the evolution of library science as a profession and its adoption and application in the American Midwest. During the period covered by the report, Iowa transitioned from a state with only a handful of free public libraries mostly concentrated in larger population hubs, to nearly seventy public libraries, many occupying Carnegie-funded buildings and a third situated in communities with populations of less than 2,000. The author traces the development of statewide and national library organizations in relation to Iowa's own initiative to create a state library commission, all of which influenced the establishment of public libraries across Iowa and helped set high standards for both the public-facing and behind-the-scenes work of library administration and management.
