This is probably due to their view as to the bounds of the subject. If it be held that the harmony text-book does not pretend to do more than show the use of chords in an abstract fashion, there is nothing more to be said beyond the fact that such a limited study is of little musical and educational value, and there are no books to bridge over the gulf between this stage and that represented by the standard required at University examinations. There are some excellent books dealing with this later stage, but none lead up to it. Even in their own limited sphere the early treatises had two grave defects: i. Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating evolution of Western music, tracing the shift from the intricate polyphony of the Renaissance to the emergence of a novel system based on chords. The author meticulously examines the limitations of older compositional methods, particularly the "figured bass" system, and advocates for a more intuitive and ear-centered approach to harmony. Through a comprehensive exploration of musical history, the book sheds light on the gradual transition from the modal system of the Middle Ages and Renaissance to the modern major and minor scales. It delves into the theoretical underpinnings of chord construction and progression, providing readers with a deeper understanding of the building blocks of harmony. The book goes beyond mere theoretical exposition, offering practical guidance on melody writing, ear training, and stylistic differentiation in composition. It emphasizes the importance of understanding the historical context and rationale behind musical rules, empowering students to apply them intelligently and creatively. By illuminating the organic development of harmonic principles, this book equips aspiring musicians with the knowledge and tools to not only master the established conventions of their craft but also to explore new frontiers of musical expression.
