Présentation de l'éditeur

“No subject is of greater present importance than that which forms the topic of this small but valuable volume....The result of the adoption of this practice is the degradation of marriage into a means of sensual self-gratification, with the inevitable accompaniment of coarsening the moral fibre in husband and wife alike. It destroys the Christian family and so tends to destroy the Christian Church. It leads to the breaking down of the discipline and self-control which are essential to the formation of character, and which have contributed so largely to the building up of civilization. Its consequences must be the speedy extinction of those ‘higher’ classes and races who make use of it, and the taking of their place by those ruder and more vigorous persons who bear and rear numerous children....We welcome and call attention to this important book by an Edinburgh physician of high standing. He treats of the matter not only from a scientific and medical standpoint, but also from that of a Christian. The fact that he is evidently a Roman Catholic interferes very little with the force of his arguments. The earlier portion deals with the social and economic questions involved. His tables of statistics, especially those which concern this country, are impressive and full of warning. He examines and exposes convincingly the weakness of many of the chief defenses of the limitation of birth by unnatural means, shows that it fails to attain the results desired, and points out the evils national, social, and individual which follow in its train. He adduces much medical testimony emphasizing the disastrous physical and mental penalties it entails. All this is done in clear English, in a vigorous and animated style, and in a matter that compels interested attention.... There is enough here to waken the thought and conscience of every reader. We strongly advise our priests and our studious laity to purchase the book.” -The American Church Monthly, Volume 11, 1922

BIBLIOGRAPHY

“The truth of these facts is indisputable, but it is nevertheless a manifest breach of logic to argue from the fact of poverty, disease, and war having checked an increase of population, that therefore poverty, disease, and war are due to an increase of population. It would be as reasonable to argue that, because an unlimited increase of insects is prevented by birds and by climatic changes, therefore an increase of insects accounts for the existence of birds, and for variations of climate. Nor is it of any use for Malthusians to say that overpopulation might be the cause of poverty. They cannot prove that it is the cause of poverty, and, as will be shown in the following chapter, more obvious and probable causes are staring them in the face.” -The Author
