A clear, firsthand look at Japanese youth after World War II, and how a new generation views family, politics, and society.
This nonfiction study reports UNESCO’s 1951–52 enquiry into the attitudes of Japanese youth. It examines how a country rebuilt its institutions and what that means for the beliefs, values, and daily lives of young people. Grounded in interviews, questionnaires, and contemporary observations, the work aims to bridge cultural distance and illuminate the hopes and concerns of a generation in transition.
- How youth relate to authority, democracy, and foreign affairs in a changing Japan
- Shifts in family life, gender roles, and personal relationships
- The role of education, work, and economic change in shaping outlooks
- The impact of postwar reforms on youth culture and social life
Ideal for readers of postwar history, sociology, and Japanese studies seeking a grounded, accessible portrait of youth at a turning point.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is the product of a 1951 UNESCO enquiry into the thoughts and concerns of Japanese youth in the wake of the country's defeat in World War II. The author, a French sociologist, and his Dutch colleague travelled to Japan to gather their data. They interviewed a broad cross-section of the youth population, from students and trade unionists to peasants and housewives, in both rural and urban areas, and from varying socio-economic backgrounds. The book provides an in-depth examination of the ways in which Japanese youth were coming to terms with their country's new political and social order and their evolving cultural identity in the post-war period. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. paperback. Etat : Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing.
