From the roughly 200 specimens gathered from Laos, a region within the Tai ethnic grouping of Southeast Asia, come mostly sculptures and reliefs. China, Japan, and Tibet contribute the remainder, with Tibet focusing primarily on religious paintings and ritual objects. Buddhism, emerging from the reform of Brahmanism at the end of the 6th or beginning of the 5th century BCE, taught that all existence is inseparable from suffering, caused by our desires and attachments. The path to liberation from this suffering is the Eightfold Path - right understanding, thought, speech, conduct, livelihood, effort, mindfulness, and contemplation. The author notes that simple historical facts on the life of Buddhism's founder, Siddhartha Gautama, have been obscured over time by accrued myths and legends. Gautama, of the Sakya clan, abandoned his life of privilege to seek understanding and enlightenment, attaining Buddhahood at 35 under the sacred Bo tree. He then spent 45 years traveling the Ganges Valley, teaching his philosophy. The author notes that this book's catalog is intended to accompany a collection on display, and that interested readers should take the descriptions provided in conjunction with viewing the pieces in person, when possible. This book's value lies in presenting, in written catalog form, a specific collection of Buddhist art objects from a variety of Buddhist cultures.
