Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines how probation officers' experiences shape their understanding of crime and criminals, and ultimately their treatment strategies. The author conducted interviews, card sorting exercises, and decision-making evaluations with probation officers to identify ten schemas that influence their perceptions of probationers. These schemas include information about criminal behavior, social histories, attributions, treatment and supervision strategies, and prognoses. The author finds that experienced officers have fewer but more detailed schemas than novice officers and that schemas affect the ease and confidence with which officers process cases. This book contributes to the understanding of how schemas guide decision-making in the criminal justice system and has implications for the development of training and decision-support tools for probation officers.
