Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents a medieval encyclopedia of knowledge, translated from French into English by William Caxton in the 15th century. It holds a double claim to the notice of all book lovers and students of medieval literature as it is the first work printed in England with illustrations, and one of the earliest encyclopedias in the English language. The book was translated at the request of Hugh Bryce, a fellow member of the Mercers Company, who wished to present it to Lord Hastings. An accurate account of the stages of the work is given, showing that it took nearly ten weeks to translate the whole of the 'Mirrow' (January 2 to March 8, 1480). This gives a fair idea of the rate of work in the Middle Ages and is a testimony to the great printer's industry. The author of the original French version is unknown though the author states that the poem was completed in January 1245. Due to a misreading during translation, the author is referred to as Gossouin. The book covers a wide range of topics, including geography, natural history, astronomy, and the seven liberal arts. It reflects the knowledge of the time, providing a fascinating glimpse into the medieval worldview.
